Re: I think he's petted!
Very unlikely you have all odd balls... 1 or 2 OK maybe... but all of them soaking is fishy... 13$ and a trip to walmart to pick up an accurite 2 in 1 might solve all your troubles and worries.

Re: I think he's petted!
Can't think of any of my 45 that soak at any point during the shed process or otherwise. I have two Acu-Rites in the snake closet. One is sitting on top of the adult rack, and generally reads between 52 and 65%. The second is inside a tub in the big rack and reads between 60-65%, sometimes it's higher though, but doesn't ever dip below 50-52%.

Mine don't soak, but I don't give them dishes large enough to soak in, either. Perhaps they would if I did? I also have one of those Zilla digital thermometer/hygrometers, and it seems to work just fine for me. It is strange that only one of your balls will not shed on its own. Do you provide him with something to rub on to get the shed off? The best place to look for mites is in the water dish. I would keep a close eye on those just in case. Otherwise I'm stumped!

I'd have to agree with the others , you shouldn't have to help with scheds. Get a new hydrometer since a lot of these are inacurate and become inacurate with age

Re: I think he's petted!
Yeah it's only hiss that I have to help shed. All the others shed by themselves. Since I keep them in a rack there is only them, substrate, and a water dish in eat tub. However when I notice that one is in shed i'll usually throw a little habba hut, or a water dish with rough edges on it so they can start their shed easily.
Since i've had hiss he's always had a problem with shedding. And i've always soaked him and pulled it off just to make sure that it's done and done right. I just think that he's gotten used to me doing that and somehow now expects it. Like I said I don't have any other problems with snakes shedding, just him.
Last night my larger pastel male "Old Yeller" had started his shed, and was in the process of pulling it off, and I just aided in getting it off him because I was in the middle of cleaning tanks, but i've never had to help him, and more than likely didn't need to help him last night.
But I think maybe some of you got the wrong impression by me saying that I think he'll wait for me to soak him, but I doubt that's the case. I just thought it was hilarious because my wife always tells me that "hiss" gets more attention than her, and that he's petted. LOL

Re: I think he's petted!
But this doesn't change the fact that ALL of my snakes soak religiously, even when they aren't in shed.
And I use prevent o' mite, in between changing substate, etc. I have had one snake with mites (baught her like that), but it was caught while she was in quarenteen (spelling?). And I haven't had a problem since. I am pretty cautious about keeping my snake tubs clean, with fresh water, and even use water conditioner so that it's better for them to drink.
MAYBE THATS IT!!!! Maybe they like to soak in the water because it has "ZOO MED Reptisafe - Instant Terrarium Water Conditioner".....
Aw hell I give up... I can't figure it out, and apparently i'm the only person with crazy snakes that like to soak.
