The desk will probably be made of pressed board with a thin layer of wood laminate OR wall paper type wood grain overlay on it..
That will warp, mold and peel with the humidity and spilled water AND snake droppings/urine.
You would do better to create a complete plexiglass tank to fit in there.

As long as it is laminated and not wall papered he should be fine as long as all joints and board ends are sealed with some kind of sealant. Lots of people on the site here have built display racks using laminated MFD board. Also a lot of people use Laminated shelving to build rack systems and they seem to last fairly well. Will it last forever? No! Will it last 5 to 10 years depending on use? It should as long as he builds it correctly and takes a few extra precautions!

I was going to line the inside with plexiglass so it wouldn't cake and be nasty and stuff and for lightiong and heating I'll out in a heat mat under the bottom piece and for lighting I think I'd place a small bulb.

If it is going to be in a desk... did I read wrong or will you be using the desk? If so, two priorities... besides can you keep it sanitary, but will the snake stay small and can it handle alot of 'you' time, vibrations, etc.
