It's generally assumed that the following are mutations of different genes:

    1. Albino (aka "regular" albino)
    2. Caramel (aka Xanthic)
    3. Lavender Albino

I know RDR has done and reported the breeding to test at least one and maybe two of these. I believe I've heard reliable reports that regular albino X lavender produces normal looking double hets and the same for caramel X lavender.

However, I'm not aware of anyone reporting having breed regular albino X caramel to test those two yet. There are actually some old results of an imported caramel producing regular albinos. The accepted explanation was that the imported caramel was also het albino. However, an alternate explanation could be that regular albino and caramel are alleles, different mutant versions of the same gene. The best way to get to the bottom of which explanation is right will be when someone breeds a regular albino to a caramel and reports if they get the expected normal looking double hets or perhaps all somewhat caramel looking albino||caramel offspring.

Great stuff Randy, thanks. I'm really starting to enjoy learning about this. Now let me throw another twist into it if you don't mind. How does the Caramel gene relate to the Caramel Albino gene? Are they only the same in name? If I had a caramel or het caramel and bred it to the het caramel albino what would happen? A similar question to the original - is the Caramel gene different from the Caramel Albino and crossing them would get you double hets of Caramel Albino/Caramel? or would the 2 caramels somehow interact F1.

p.s. I got myself so confused with the Punnett squares that I can't even do simple ones at the moment:rolleye2: Could anyone give me the combinations/% of each offspring from a het caramel albino X Pastel het caramel albino.

I hadn't noticed caramel and caramel albino being used separately. I think it just depends on how much the person wants to write. I believe caramel, caramel albino, xanthic, and probably even xanthic albino (can't remember for sure but might have seen that one) are all different names for the same mutation.

Now, that being said I do think there are some new lines called caramel that might be different mutations all together that just happen to look some what like the established caramels and need a new name and maybe one has been given to them already and I'm just behind.

My question is has anybody bred to double het caramel albino x lavendar abino or abino to date and if so would it have any effect or because it's on the same chromosome would it not make any difference it'd be one or the other. Or lethal combination?

Here's a fantastic link for you done by our very own Judy (JLC). It's a sticky in the Ball Python Morphs & Genetics area of BPNet. :)

    http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=52847

At the end of it you'll find some great links for further study and help to understand the complexities of their genetic potential.
