Also, the bulb you were using is fine, i just wanted to check. Improper uvb is one of the leading causes of death in small turtles and torts.

As far as I know this ONLY applies to water turtles and has never been applied to tortoises. Different states, cities and even counties have enacted their own rules and regulations now.

You can simply tell any seller at a show you are using it for educational purposes and purchase any size water turtle you want.

The original ban was to protect kids from getting salmonella, which is easy to get from poopy water.

Tortoise hatchlings are really quite easy to keep if you meet their lighting, heating and dietary requirements.

BD, the law that banned the sale of turtles and tortoises under 4" was lifted last spring.

I can't believe we were so careful and lost him! It amazes me that we can drag in torts that are at deaths door and with care they thrive. Here we had him vet checked and even with the furnace down he had his basking light on and this happens. We were so excited when we got him. We had even kept him quarantined all this time because of him being so young. If we get another tort, it will have to be at least a yearling. We get too attached. When we took Daisy in, knowing she was sick and spent so much on her surgery people looked at us like we've lost our minds. But she is very active now and enjoys life. She was scared to death when we got her, now nothing bothers her. Sorry about the long post, just wanted to get my feelings out.

I know what you mean. These cute and personable tortoises can totally tug at our heartstrings! Sometimes even though you do every possible thing right and there are no signs of anything wrong at all it just doesn't work out, which is so hard to understand. Daisy is certainly very lucky to have you as are the rest of your torts!

I know I did my best. I don't blame myself, but I will start with older torts in the future. I was worried about him even when he was doing great. He was so delicate and tiny. Next time I'll let someone else worry over the babies.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have a leopard and he is the coolest, i would be very sad to loose him.

Unfortunately with any baby animal not all survive and that age is the critical time if they will make it or not.
