Actually cedar and pine do have a lot in common. The most common being phenols, that sweet aromatic scent. They are caustic, poisonous, acidic compounds that are very commonly used in cleaning products. Pinesol and Lysol are a few of the brands that use these phenols.

They have been shown to increase liver enzymes and cause liver and kidney disease in small animals.

Phenols are present in all softwoods, so sticking to hardwoods is recommended.

I meant if it was fresh and smelling of pine. If its well dried I've never had a problem. In fact, I have never had a problem with adult snakes at all, just a few babies back in the long ago.

personally i wouldnt risk using pine for any of my animals, pine is toxic to small animals so i wouldnt take a chance. You can get the huge bags of aspen for like 12 bucks at petco/petsmart in the rodent section anyway.

:gj::gj:Yes I recently switched to paper. I bought fat rolls of unprinted news paper and that stuff is great and amazingly cheap compared to any kind of wood bedding. Easy to clean the cages and It also lacks the possible problems of using the wrong kind of wood shavings.:gj::gj:
