zoology basically means the study of animals, and that can take you a lot of places...

It does not refer to being a zoo keeper, but that is certainly one of the careers that could come out of a zoology major.

Check out this page for a long, but I really don't think comprehensive list of possible careers for a zoology major:
    http://www.science.siu.edu/zoology/zoology-careers.html

As far as not being available in So. Cal., I'm not sure what you mean. In a few minutes I was able to get this list of schools in CA (didn't take the time to limit it to So. Cal.) that offer zoology majors. Also, at many schools that don't offer an official zoology major, you could major in biology and simply choose to focus in zoology.

    Cal State Polytechnic Univ., Pomona
    CSU Fresno
    CSU Long Beach
    Cerritos College, Norwalk
    Chabot College, Hayward
    El Camino College, Torrance
    Fullerton College
    Humboldt State Univ., Arcata
    Palomar College, San Marcos
    San Bernardino Valley College
    San Francisco Stage Univ.
    Sonoma Stage Univ., Rohnert Park
    UC Davis
    UC Santa Barbara

One more thing. I went to usajobs.gov and searched with the keyword zoology. Salaries went up above $100,000. So there are zoology careers that pay quite well.

Although I love all animals and would give just about anything to work with them for a profession... when it came to school my motto was do as little as possible to get by. Unfortunately that motto wouldnt have gotten me through freshman biology so Business Admin it was... 5 1/2 yrs and 4 colleges later I got my degree from Empire State College... If you got the drive to keep you focused while at school to get your work done then do it up!! Unfortunately I got caught up in having too much fun and not enough work. I would look into colleges in FL... I know when I was on a spring break trip we went to animal kingdom and we spoke to a girl who was doing an internship there... cant remember what school she was attending but I know it was in FL.

HAHAHAhA I didn't even finish this. but HAHAHAHA!!!

    I there with ya!

Ever since i've had my BP, (only about a month), i've learned so much about them and other reptiles. I went to the Vet to get some information, and now i'm contemplating becoming a Herp vet. The only problem is, i'd have to be a complete vet I imagine.

They have a good Animal Science program, but is based around farm animals. There is also an Equine Science program as well.

What I did was get a general science major and take the Herpetology class that is offered, as well as worked with the Reptile room that is available in the Science department.

It worked out pretty well, and the man I worked with in the Reptile room was a very well known Herper during the earlier years, so it was a lot of fun.

I was thinking about checking Cal Poly, i just didnt know how the program was there. Im glad you said it worked out good for you. maybe ill look into that.
