This morning I contacted my local pet stores looking for feeder rats of an appropriate size (fuzzies) – without luck. I even debased myself to phoning PetSmart and listening to a suspicious young lady ask, “This isn’t for food, is it?” when I asked about the ages of rats they carry. (Only 8-10 weeks. Gah!)

The other pet store in my area that sold live feeders only had mice. They don’t carry rats. So, using a chart I found here: Mouse Rat Size Chart I decided to go with an appropriate sized mouse. At this point, I just wanted to get him eating and to establish a baseline to go from.

I was able to get a rat-fuzzy sized mouse that also happened to be newly pregnant (a mousey Happy Meal!). Upon putting her in Salzedo’s enclosure he seemed curious about the new playmate, but within a couple minutes he had struck and was feeding. He gobbled her down and then retreated to his hot hide. I’m so freekin’ happy! He ATE! Sure, it was live, and a mouse, but at least I now have somewhere to ‘work’ from.

I’ll follow the advice I’ve gotten here and feed him live for a couple more weeks, and then do a fresh-kill, and after that, try a frozen/thaw. *crosses fingers*

Thanks again everybody. My boy ate!

Horror scenes? I can only imagine. Fortunately, although I am live-feeder impaired in my area, I do have several pet stores that stock quality frozen feeders from reputable breeders here in Ontario. In that way, I am lucky. Now I just have to get him interested in f/t… but that will come in time, god willing. *crosses fingers*

Yeah I meant to suggest maybe looking for a mice sized substitute. None of the stores around me carry anything smaller than "small" rats.

I'm glad he ate for you. Hopefully he continues the trend.

I've opened 2 bags of petco mice that were filled with blood and all the mice were covered in blood. So now I buy live.
