I got 4 babies....about 2 months old. I have them seperated into two pairs in 30-something gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck storage bins with acrylic tops. These smaller enclosures are only for babies and troublemaker individual Storr's monitors...I have pictures taken but I can't find them on my disorganized server, so I will upload them again this evening. I am going to get to work on their adult enclosures this weekend hopefully...I have a month or so until they will need something bigger so I have time.

...and yes.....hopefully they breed and give me plenty of eggs ;)

so basically you dont need the height you just want floor space. are you building another plastic or something wood?

They need height as well as the floor space. The more room the better. With most terrestrial monitors, a high enclosure height is not necessary though....just kinda like an added bonus. The Roughneck tubs provide about 12" of clearance between the top and soil....which is good enough for babies.

I have not decided on the material yet....still working on the plans ;) Wood does not tend to hold up for long term because of the constant contact with soil, so plastic, FRP or metal caging is generally recommended.

Yep. I have been having a hell of a time finding someone local that carries the stuff though...so I may get a buddy to order me some sheet PVC instead. I would rather the FRP though.

its prolly more thermal than pvc to i know you said they dont need much heat but the heat that is there....

Nice looking ackies you got there Daniel. I've had my 5 for a lil over a month and they are amazing little monitors. So amazing that I'm getting ready to just focus on ackies and my new tristis only. Easy to care for. I will start construction myself on their perm. home. I also am having a hard time finding FRP. I believe my home depot might have it but not sure.

Hi, I don't really know much about moniters, so this may seem like a dumb question: How much can you interact with them? Do you get them out to hold and play with? Or are they just to look at? Thanks

I do not generally interact with my monitors besides feeding and cage maintenance. But then again, if I am in the room with them, they will interact with me in some fashion. Very aware and curious animals sometimes. I do take them out and handle them to make sure everything is ok once a month.

Alot of people treat their monitors like dogs and cats. I don't believe in holding to 'play with' with any reptile.....monitors and all reptiles are not dogs or cats. I don't think any enjoy being 'played with'.

I would not say just to look at. I keep my monitors to learn from them. Unlike 'display' animals like Green Tree Pythons, monitors are generally active and display a facinating array of behaviors. I am always seeing something new from them. They are smart interesting little creatures.

Hey Daniel congrats! They are one of my fave. lizards ever! I think I told you that I had a huge crush on a red one once... :D
