Re: I can't get rats to breed! :(
Even if it's a wire cage, if it's about the size of a ten gallon tank, it really is too small for two young adult rats. I'd say for now seperate them, give them a couple of weeks apart, feed them a better dry mix and then reunite them and see what happens. In the meantime weigh that female and see if she's really big enough to be bred (minimum 250 grams).
Don't worry about the male being bigger. As long as he's a good breeder he won't hurt her and quite honestly, female rats tend to be more bossy in my experience than male rats. Male rats just basically want to eat, sleep, groom and make out. That's about all they care about in life LOL
I just ran in and did a fast weight check on my biggest male breeder rats. The boys all range around the 500 to 550 mark and that's solid weight - not a fat rat in the crew. They regularily breed with females that range from our virgin girls of 250 plus to the big experinced females of around 350 to 400 grams. I don't keep a male if he's mean to the ladies in the breeding tubs so I've never seen problems with males beating up on females more than once. I have had a female turn on a male much bigger than her but paired with a more dominant natured male rat, she smartened up fast.
