start out with the 1/2 pound of food--that should last a good while.

yep, the white supports are closet rod holders. i have a ton of them if you want some or can't find any locally (shoot me a pm)--i tried getting them at walmart but they always had only one or two sets at a time so i just bought a big box of them off of ebay.

real plants aren't better for the geckos in any way. if you do go with real plants go with something like pothos or ficus. i prefer fake plants because they are easier and can be scrubbed and/or replaced easily.

Ok a few more questions - thanks for putting up with all of them.

substrate? The care sheets say they need about 60% humidity so something like ecco bark (those coconut bricks you add water too)? or something else?

Are hides needed? If so what are the best types and where should they be placed (high or low)

Thanks...the more I learn the more questions I have :D

i use paper towel substrate for all my cresteds. i'd recommend you start with paper towels so you can monitor feces and eating more closely. once you see that everything looks good and the gecko is eating normally you can change to something more natural if you choose. i'd recommend the bed-a-beast/coconut coir bedding that comes in a block like you mentioned--that doesn't tend to have large chunks and is safer should some of it be ingested (and it likely will if you feed crickets).

i do provide hides on the ground for my geckos and many of them do use them. some sleep in the leaves during the day and some sleep under the hides on the ground, so i go ahead and provide them so they can choose. they also love empty paper towel rolls placed on the bottom of the cage--3 or 4 geckos will smush themselves into one of those at a time. :P
