Ok well then here is the route I took. in 06 I picked up an 05 het pied male, an 06 spider male, 06 pastel male, 06 pastel female, 05 genetic banded female, 06 female Mojave, 5 1600 gram normal females. This year I picked up an 06 female het pied.
This year I am breeding spider and pastels. Holding back 2 female pastels and one female spider if I can

Next year I am picking up an 07 Axanthic male, 07 Hypo male, 07 hypo female, 07 male YB, 07 Female YB, 07 male Pinstripe, 07 Male Cinni
I am going to be breeding for Bees/blast and Mojave Pastels and if my Het pieds are up to snuff I'll plug them in. Might even see about getting a breeder female spider for a honeybee project or a Spinner.

I personally would say go with the cinny or the het pieds, but that's personal preferance. Or get both, as cinny pieds make me drool :)

Man I am itty bitty micro small time maybe 1/4 a step over hobbiest. I am doing it the poor mans way. Plus I jsut love the combos. If I ever produce a bee that bugger is going in a display case in the snake room not in a rack.

Well that's the point duh! You hit someone 1/4th over hobbyist, they're less likely to have MAJOR security you'd find at the big places ;)

Besides, have you seen some of the things they keep at nerd!?!? I'm not walking around there in the dark!

That is one thing that should not be a problem really. My gf does marketing and graphic design. Heh, she is already itching to get the website up and has the rough design done already. Her best friend makes websites for a living and we are getting the "friend" rate on that too. :D

As for other aspects, i am helping out a vendor at a reptile expo in a couple weeks who also is in charge of the expo. That should be a good learning experience. I also have made a few contacts with local breeders and fellow herp lovers, and those will also grow over the years.

At this point really, it will be a good season or 2 before i have anything significant to offer morph wise. Selling the normals and few male pastels will not be to hard between kingsnake, reptilescanada, and local online classifieds.

PS - I am a carpenter and i got baby racks and adult racks in the works. I figure it costs whether i build them huge or small, so might as well build some giant racks! I have no problem with a house full of snakes! :D

OoOoOo .. Or the super cinny pied ... the salt & pepper ball! :D Whatever isn't white, turns out black. I have yet to see a pic of one though.

I would go for a Pinstripe.. if you've already got a base of females, why not get one of those (an '07) and breed with him next year? Since you want to make some Pastels this year..

Well, here is my line of thinking that is pushing me towards something longer term like a female or a pair of hets. My spider male should be ready to breed next year, to go along with my current pastel male. With only having 2 breeding age females ready at that time, i won't need 3 breeder males just yet.

Hey Robin, I would recommend you go for recessives, once they breed and produce visuals, you will then be able to trade for any and all dom/co-dom animals down the line.

Pieds for one will always be in demand and can be crossed with almost everything for cool combo projects. I would however be cautious with buying proven adults, why would anybody sell a good breeder female :cool: I prefer growing up my own :)

All in all, you need to visualize what projects you want to work with in the future.

I totally understand what you are saying Marc, and it gets pretty jumbled when you start thinking of 5 year breeding plans ... lol.

The next purchase would be an 07 snake. As for the 3 current adults i recently purchased. The breeder i got him off got shipped to Inuvik for work and needed to downsize his collection. They are awesome people and have great reputations locally among breeders here as well. I am not too worried, but thanks for the heads up anyways, i get the point you are making.

Haha, too bad you are out of lil pastel girls for the year. That partially helps the selection process. :P So far i am leaning towards the pair of het ghosts, though pieds would also be awesome. Like many hobbyist level breeders, cost is a factor and a reality.
