Some books give very generalized info, so saying 76-88 isnt entirely wrong BUT they are not mentioning that 76 is an extreme low (for breeding cycles) and 88 is kind of on the lower end of the warm side. If you shoot for the 84 cool and 93 warm there will always be some fluctuations but in general you should not have many problems and your snake should eat well and shouldn't get stress related illnesses.

Thor has never turned down a meal, so he probly just loves the  side. :P

I agree that so long as temps are fine, they will choose the temp that's best for them. My female spider NEVER goes on her cool side, ever. At first I thought it may have been a hide issue, so I tried switching them, she still chose the cool side. Yet she's never missed a meal, and is my fastest grower; go figure.

    Matthew,
This is not necessarily directed at you, but I wanted to say a little something about this scenario that I think is different from the one we are discussing, in case someone reads this in the future. If your snake never leaves the hot side, it could possibly mean that your temps are too low, and the snake stays on the hot side because it is trying to warm up, but cannot if temps are too low. In this scenario, the keeper would want to check and double check the warm side temps to ensure that you are providing adequate heat.

This is different than one that stays on the cool side(assuming that hot side temps aren't too high) because the cooler temps might be the comfort level of that snake.

Good point. I was just sharing my experiences with "odd" ones. The temps are spot on in my case; the snake in the tub next to her is more "normal" in his preference. She's just bizarre in her preference was all I'm saying.
