It's not at all odd that Mr. Snake might have a poor first shed, a lot of them do until they adjust to better husbandry and you will likely be tweaking that here and there as you learn what works best for him. There's a great sticky here about how to help if he has a poor shed.
Probing or popping by your herp vet won't be at all traumatic. It's over very quickly and really the snake doesn't fuss much about it. They wiggle a bit but that's more I think from just being restrained (all pets do that at the vet in my experience, snake or not).

Thanks, everyone for your replies. Yes, I found the sticky on bad shed shortly after my last post.
Killerkid, put it this way, when I made the vet appt. the receptionist asked if he had a name yet. I said, "Mr. Snake." She said, "You must have kids." She was right. My 6 yr. old son, Ryan, named him. And the props should go to his friend, Loki, only 4 yrs old, who has Mr. Frog. Ryan "borrowed" the naming methodology....
Glad you like the name. It's growing on us all. And so is he.
Is it possible to have only one BP? I'm resisting the urge here.... My husband jokes about me getting my "fix" by holding Mr. Snake.... LOL! The down side is that I can't get my fix when he is shedding or digesting!

Well we have 18 of them and we started with one tiny female that my husband bought me for a present if that tells you anything.

Wow! That is great. How long ago did you start with the one? And how many of them do you have living together / how many alone?
I am still trying to grapple with the BP addiction since it's so new to me. It started with a fascination, then continued with what seems to be a release of endorphins when I hold him. Luckily, my husband doesn't think I'm too nuts and seems to have a slight addiction, too. Though he has started calling me Cleopatra on ocassion.

We have already started talking about it. My husband found a great website and the guy said "Snakes are like potato chips. You can't have just one." But my husband made me promise to think about it for a week before acting on the impulse. That will be long over before two months! LOL!

It is very tempting. Some are GORGEOUS, but also expensive and my hubbie just quit his job! I make $5 a week (ha ha, I'm serious though). So...
Personally, I like the idea of a rescue, but my hubbie is concerned we'll get a BP that has been mistreated, etc. and won't have a good temperment.
I was wondering, are most BP's amazingly wonderful in terms of temperment, personality, and handle-ability, or did we just get lucky? Our guy amazes me daily.

I have a one that will hiss and strike at me before I lift him out of his enclosure, but is fine once he gets out -- some are very defensive about having someone reach in overtop of them, so I find with those that using a towel or pillowcase can help. For the most part they are very docile and if they're not, it can get better with handling.
I think rescuing is a very noble thing to do -- the only problem with that is you may end up with a very expensive vet bill in some cases.
