Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
Glad to here you figured it out. She is a pretty little one.
:D
Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
she seems to be tracking people if they walk by her tank. or maybe its hunting behavior. she definitely seems to be looking for something.
i only got her on friday, and the place where i got her fed them on mondays. should i attempt to feed her on tuesday? wednesdays i have class for 12 hours so she'd have a really long time to digest and ive got early classes thursday morning so that is the best time for her to be absolutely left alone after she's eaten. for 48 hours. i could try feeding her -next- tuesday. if you think this coming tuesday would be too soon?
and thank you guys SO much again. you're such a help even for a reptile noob like myself. i want to do whats best for my pet so i can have her with me for many many years to come.
Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
Usually when they are very active it means that they are stressed out by temps, humidity, new surroundings, too much handling, or maybe even to much noise. My BP is usually very active at night, but since they are noctural I don't worry about it too much. I did notice him wandering around during the day the day before I usually feed him. I thought he might be looking for food so I feed him that same day (which was a day early according to schedule). He took the food very quickly and then chilled out in his hides for the next few days, then he continued his nighttime travels. As I mentioned I far from experienced compared to most on the site, but I'm convinced the extra activity was due to his hunger. Considering your BP usually eats on Mondays he may be looking for food, if all husbandry considerations are in check. I would continue to feed on Mondays if that's what he's used to. I believe hatchlings usually start out on mouse pups (that may not be the right term, but baby mice). These are very small and unless he's eating 2 in a meal you may want to consider feeding a little more frequently. I've read that hacthlings can eat every 5-6 days. If that's innacurate then all you experienced owners please chime in.
What has he been eating?
Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
Hi,
Do the temperatures in your room stay relatively stable?
The reason I ask is because the best practice is to have the heat source regulated so that the snake can never come into contact with temperatures that could cause it harm.
I would always recomend thermostats ( good on/off types are johnson controls or ranco and good proportionals are helix or herpstat - I can't in good concience recomend zoomed thermostats after some of the threads I've read on here) but if the ambient temps are quite stable you could use a dimmer switch for a little while till you got a thermostat.
The ideal solution would be to adjust the dimmer or t/stat so that the temperature on the glass above the UTH is 94-95f and then change the depth/type of substrate till it reads 92-94 inside the hot end hide.
It can take a bit of time to get it set up but once its done then you only need to check to make sure it hasnt changed significantly.
When you say you use a red bulb is this outside the tank shining through the top or inside the tank? if it is the latter then this too would obviously need gaurded and if needed there are some pictures of simple home made ones in my gallery.
And thankyou for the pictures - we liiiike pictures.:D

she's been on weanlings ( mice weanlings, not yet rats ) . they look kinda big to me..but then again i've never done this before. they're smaller than her girth and the store owner said that what they've been eating, he even called the guy who fed them to make sure. eventually i would like to switch her to rats but..thats not something for this week or even next week. i think maybe once shes completely settled in and eating consistently i'll try switching her to rat pups.
as for the temps, my room does kind of fluctuate. the humidity for now feels pretty consistent..its been raining. but the temp varies . also, im not using a red bulb for her yet, i ordered her one so that way in the winter she will have two heat sources because it could easily drop to below 0 F outside during the day here. but for now its been in the 70-80s outside or hotter, and this house has no AC. also, my thermostat is in the mail its coming to me. lol
thanks again guys!
Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to go from mouse weanlings to mice, then to rat pups or rats.
Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
the place i got her from said to call them when i think she's too big for the mice or needs a bigger prey size and then we'd go from there.
thanks for clarifying the order and such.
shes sleeping now ( or so i assume ). the temps are steady. and she's using her grape log as a pillow. haha
Re: Crazy temps thermometers and humidity
Clockwork,
Also keep in mind that some people keep their BP's their entire life only feeding mice. Adults can do fine with two adult mice a week. I was previously overfeeding my boy with two 40g rats a week and just recently switched to one. He switched to rats without a hickup, other snakes may never switch over and it's really not a big deal. As long as your snake is eating you should be happy.
