A federal law? Got a link?

I went back to work (I'm a teacher) on 8/27. All the schools in my area started that day.

Its a state decision. Gov Granholm (MI) said that starting school the week before as was previously done was hurting tourism.

I don't know if that's true or not but I know its been the cause of inconsistencies in public school districts even as local K-12 where not all starting on the same day. I know especially for our Career Tech Centers (where I work now) it pretty much made that first week of school a complete waste as no real instruction could be started until all the local districts where in session.

Just for some background, I'm not a teacher but have worked for public education for over 10yrs now. I'm what most of you (teachers) like to call "the tech guy". :P

Well that would be awesome as a student but as a parent that would suck. That means more money goes towards a babysitter. BOOO! :2cent: :2cent: :2cent: :2cent:

it started today for my 10 year old... I can't believe he's in the fifth grade. where did the time go? this is the first year that he's started school after labor day. From K-4th grade, he started on the monday before labor day and then already the first week of school had a three day weekend.. didn't make any sense to me. But if its true about that law being passed that says schools start after labor day then that would explain the change and it makes sense to me to start after labor day.

Apparently you didn't see my clarification post that what I mentioned was a state decision and that the state in which I have worked in education for is one of them (MI).
