Re: What an AWESOME kill!!!
While it was interesting to see nature at work ie using the branch to help, I never finding the killing of anything awesome.
I have to agree these types of videos only make our hobby suffer.
It is what it is, they kill to eat just like we do and a large % of the animal pop.
I find it a part of the hobby but I in no way find any enjoyment in watching the "kill". I find it disturbing when I see those who do enjoy it. :2cent:

wow, I am sorry, I didn't think people would take it this seriously, I understand why some are upset, and I'm sorry for starting this thread, I myself also feed F/T, i would never feed live, after I have seen what can happen to your snake if a rat bites it. But like I said earlier i just think it was interesting to see nature at its best, didn't think people would be upset over it.
Sorry! :(

Ugh! To me, the word "awesome" and "kill" doesn't belong in the same sentence.

Completely agreed...

Re: What an AWESOME kill!!!
It is an unusual kill for me, my snakes don't have a branch like that. I noticed that the owner had 'stunned' the rat. If they really wanted to glorify it, wouldn't they have dropped in a live one?
I'm just curious, I have never videotaped my snakes eating, I don't think I ever will (there's plenty of them). I don't think there's anything wrong with just videotaping a kill, just don't make any crude remarks, and do it/title it in a respectful manner.

Sadly this has nothing to do with live or F/T it has to do with respect being given to the prey.
While we all enjoy the fact that our snakes eat we take no enjoyment in the death of another animal.
Anyone making such video only does so for attention, sadly it reflects on the herp community as a whole giving us a bad reputation.
Just my :2cent: (Tax Included ;) )

I'm not quite what you'd call a bunny-hugger, but I'll also be damned if I sit quietly by while others give the "anti-herps-in-the-private-sector yahoos" more ammo to try to take my snakes away. If you don't think they're out there reading sites like this one, kingsnake.com & others, you're in for a big surprise.
Just my $2.00 (fuel surcharge & all that).
K~
P.S. No offense intended whatsoever to the OP...just a wake-up call. :)
stands up and applauds

I'm hoping that no one thinks that I made this video, because I didn't. Just wanna put that out there.

I don't think anyone thinks that. I understand that you're new to the hobby, and these animals are pretty amazing and awesome. It *IS* incredible how something with no limbs is able to kill and consume its prey. I think everyone who owns a snake has experienced a feeling of awe when they witnessed a snakes ability to hunt and feed, and that might be why you posted a link to this video.
However, when you raise rats or mice and feed a collection of snakes for months or years you tend to acquire a respect for the predator AND prey. It's not easy to think about the hundreds or thousands of lives that you take in order to feed your pets, but it's a necessity and you soon respect the relationship between the two.
I think a lot of people get upset when they see these types of videos because it perpetuates the stereotype that many people have of snake owners as heartless, sadistic people that get off on the suffering of "cute" animals like rats, mice or bunnies. In reality, most snake owners have a feeling of love an adoration for their scaly pets just as much as their furry pets.

Re: What an AWESOME kill!!!
Well, I don't think the video is that bad.
Some herps do not fed frozen.
The title is the only thing I don't like that much here but I do not have to let him know for the 6-7th time. And I'm not kicking him for that. Reason i mentioned it was to just get the point across in my statement.
I think sometimes on this site from what I have seen here and there that sometimes people are too quick to jump on someone and don't give them that much to defend themselves. Even if it was a little mistake.
When I first came here I was a bit on the non-educated side but it's a whole lot better now.
But really. This could drive some people away.
As for watching my bp feed. I like it. It's different than him chilling in his hide all day.
Do i like the fact about feeding something to him no where near his size that isnt ready for a hit?
Not so much.
