One other thing to consider if you're worried about the presence of mites....is to take out your current substrate and put down white papertowels instead. If there's little black bugs in there, you'll see them much more easily on the paper.
Also, while holding the snake, take a damp, white paper towel....wrap it gently around the snake's body and rub down the length of the body...then open it up and see if any little black (or otherwise darkly colored) bugs end up on the paper.
If mites ARE present, it is not something that will clear up on its own. They will multiply FAST. Soaking and products like "Reptile Relief" or "Mite Off" that you find in pet stores will help get rid of the mites you can see, but the eggs already laid will hatch and the problem will start all over. A product called Provent-a-Mite (PAM) will kill the eggs and the bugs in all stages of life, thus getting rid of them for good.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I've finally got it figured out. Hopefully all this is precautionary, I'll be finding out soon.
