Re: Getting into boas hopefully
Honey, no one's attacking you. In your original post, you asked us if we thought it would be wise to wait until after college to get a boa... and we gave you our answer. I'm sure you've heard it said to learn from other's mistakes... take the advice of people who have experienced it.
We did forget to mention the tank question... yes, you can house a boa in a tank. But you're going to have to work a lot more at it than you would a cage. You're going to have to pay more attention to your temps and your humidity because they are more likely to fluctuate. Tanks are more difficult to maintain, but they aren't all bad.
Beyond that, I believe all your questions have been answered in an honest, forthwrite manner.

Re: Getting into boas hopefully
i realize that now, but hey, im 15, hormones right?? lol,in all seriousness though, it's just that i rly want a boa and hearing that i'll have to wait was not what i wanted to hear, so i took it kind of harshly. In conclusion, i've decided to take all of your advice, seeing as you're probably all more experienced than i am in this field (i've had two snakes, a garter and bp, nothing compared to a boa) and wait till at least sophmore year to see if it's right 4 me.

Re: Getting into boas hopefully
i would just say, i cannot stand the idea of being seperated from my snakes. i would just save what you could for your animals, when you know you'll have extra for a dry spell. i'd wring my hands constantly if i couldnt go run and check on crowley when i felt the need :P

Waiting til Sophomore year is a GREAT idea! I understand the REALLY REALLY wanting a critter part, heck, I think anyone does. A boa and a veiled chameleon are top on my list right now, but I'm in the same situation. I'm a senior in college and I need to get a job, get an apartment, move around, etc., etc. Believe me, it's not a fun thing to hear about putting it off.
Freshman year will be the biggest change in your life thus far (unless you've moved around a lot or went to boarding school). There's all kinds of new things that you have to get in order and learn how to balance, and it's hard enough just doing that with social and school work. Every semester I've had to spend 500-700 dollars on USED books and I have to spend around 4-6 hours a night studying. You can't get by on any less.
Once you get to sophomore year, you'll have things in order, you'll know what your workload is like, etc., etc. will already have been established. Thumbs up dude! Send me pics of the snake once you have everything in order, hopefully I'll be able to send you some of my boa too!

Awesome. I've always been scared of getting a ball python (due to their reluctance to feed sometimes) but I love pictures of them.

Re: Getting into boas hopefully
If your neighbor has a boa constrictor that is nearly 15 feet long, then that is a world record. The stated max for a boa constrictor was one over 18 feet from Trinidad in the early 1900s and that was a misidentified green anaconda. I think he probably has a Burmese python if it's that size. As for the snake issue for you, I would a least get through your first year of college so that you know exactly what to expect as far as free time for snakes is concerned. One or two snakes is honestly not a whole lot of work as long as you are doing daily maintenance (water, food, cleaning, etc.). But for the animal's sake, I would wait just to be sure. A lot can change in a year, too.

Re: Getting into boas hopefully
it's definitely no burmese python, i know a red-tail when i see one. the official measurement (that i was present for) is 13' 3". Obviously this is NOWHERE near 15', and im still confused as to why she told me that. that is still quite large for a boa. i think there are two reasons y its so big, but im no expert: 1. shes only ever fed it rats, which ive heard are more nutritious than mice and 2. she sprinkled the feed with calcium. Like i said im not an expert, but those are just 2 of the things ive noticed when shes talked about it.

Re: Getting into boas hopefully
btw, does ne1 know of any reputable breeders in longisland, new york or northern new jersey? i figured the next best thing to owning one is working with a breeder or possibly even a zoo.
