Ouch, luckily the only time mine struck and got me her mouth was closed. I was cleaning out her cage and she hit me on my arm with her head but after that was fine. A few times shes gotten cage defensive but for the most part shes pretty easy going.
Re: What are the signs that a bp is about to bite you?
Oh they can hiss LOL and bite if they want to. Anything with teeth can and will bite. Most ball pythons just don't tend to use that as their preferred first line of defense but don't for a minute think they aren't quite capable of it if push comes to shove. For me, it's about their overall intensity. Just something I pick up from their posture or a certain look they have and I know it's just not time to mess about with that particular snake at that particular moment. :)
Re: What are the signs that a bp is about to bite you?
Usually after you have a snake for awhile you will learn it's habits and "positioning". I also have one that hisses quite a bit, but that's just her warning to stay away from me. She is not a snake that likes much handling.
Re: What are the signs that a bp is about to bite you?
We have a couple of habitual hissers. They never bite or strike...they both just like to grumble a whole bunch LOL. Funny enough our worst biter, never once hissed at us first. I don't think she wanted to give us any warning or time to avoid her teeth. :D
Re: What are the signs that a bp is about to bite you?
my snake, Brimstone, is always ready to scrap. But you can tell very easily when he will strike.
Stiff posture, very tense
S shape neck
puffs up, to look bigger
Got a GOOD lock on heat and movement
never hissed though...
Re: What are the signs that a bp is about to bite you?
I have several that hiss when approached, but never strike, and an adult female that comes straight out and bites without getting into the S position at all.
In my experience, no two BPs are the same. You just need to know your snakes.

Does a BP bite hurt?
I've never got bitten and well I'm sure I will sooner or later. My girl has not showed any sign of wanting to bite me. She is a very active. But on the other hand my cousin has a 4 foot BP and when I hold her she does not like any1 to touch me when she is around my neck I can hear her hiss when I got her. She is like my Guard Snake, lol. She never once went into striking mode with me.

Well... RIGHT before they bite you, they generally have their mouth open and they're lunging at you at very high speeds. Godspeed!!! :D

If a snake is hissing, it's not going anywhere near my neck/face area LOL.
Re: What are the signs that a bp is about to bite you?
The only sign I have seen indicating my buds BP was going to bite was when it's hanging off his arm. Now much of a sign but hey :D
Just keep an eye out for that oh so clear S shape in the neck, when I see that I tend to wait a while to clean the water bowl if ya know what I mean ;)
On a serious note though I do have a fear that I could injure my snake if he strikes at me and I yank my arm back with him on it. The bite doesnt scare me but the thought of jumping back causing him to smack into something does which is why I look for the obvious signs to avoid it.
