I was watching the national news...its an issue still with the ranchers... Supposedly the wolves in those areas have killed not only the native populations of elk...but large numbers of cattle and sheep.

They stated that the current legislation entitles the ranchers to shoot wolves if they have proof that they are destroying livestock....and in the last five years close to 100 wolves have been taken by ranchers.

Honestly... we're encroaching on their territory...they are only going to still do what is natural...just find a different source. Its a shame we can't cohabitate better....

On the bright side...there are studies being run for non-lethal ways to prevent the livestock loss.

i've seen a few different preventative measures on tv... the only problem is that for ranchers with a lot of acreage, it's gonna take a lot of money. wouldn't want that.... let's just kill 'em instead!

This is so sad, just when we are begging to see the wolf return to it's natural habitat and range this qenius and his friends seem to think they need to kill somthing else this time harmless animals.I know the deer population in northern lower michigan is getting so inbred and overpopulted that they are dying in droves from t.b. A more active wolf popultion would help this problem so if they are over poputlating move them to regions of the nation that could use these beautiful animals. It's sad to see deer elk or any other animal die of a disease when there are ways to help controll the popultaion. You can see it in the hunting regulations the best way to trim down and over populated speices thru hunting would be to take out doe's not the bucks and the trophy bucks that so many hunters go after are the ones you want to leave to promote healthy new fawns. It's no suprise to see the bush administration trying to destroy somthing so beutifull if it might harm either hunting or devlopment. Maybe we could open a hunting season on people building golf courses in the elks habitat.

    LOL

Well I'm not sure if I miss read it or not but the original article said that the bill would allow Local Governors to deal with the problem as they see fit. That they (local Governors) are the one pushing for the killing of 700 of the population not the Bush Administration. How would Bush profit from greater development in those areas. If anything the local government might be being influenced by those local developers and ranchers.. Just a thought.
