Re: How to pick up bp from enclosure?
I always tap the top of his hide a couple times to 1. wake him up if he's sleeping and 2. let him know I am there. This way he is not completely startled when I life his hide to take him out. I only take him out maybe twice a week, other than that I just let him be.
The only time he snapped at me was when I was changing his water once. When I opened his cage he immediately came out of his hide, the closer I moved my hand inside the more he came out and then and took a quick nip. I seriously think he was hungry though and it hasnt happened since.
Re: How to pick up bp from enclosure?
I kinda have the same problem.
I Just got my first ball python a couple days ago.
Im alittle confused and nervous about
handling him,Ive only held him a couple times. First time i did
scared me! he moved his head so fast i thought he bit me.
I touch him and sometimes i pick him up from the very back and work
my way up is that ok?
I'm really nervous about putting my hand under his head i try
to avoid his head as much as possible every time he moves his head i think hes
gonna strike! Also he likes to borrow under that aspen stuff during the day how do i get him out of that? I really love him...and i want to hold him..but this
fear is getting in the way. What am i suppose to do? >_<

If you got him a few days ago, you shouldn't be trying to hold him at all. You need to leave him alone and let him acclimate and not hold him until after he's had a succesful feed with you.
Are you the same guy on another forum that got his snake Monday and then tried to feed him the next day in a shoebox waving a mouse in his face?
Your story sounds the same and writing style is the same.
Re: How to pick up bp from enclosure?
leave you snake for about 1 week to get used to the tank...then get it into a feeding pattern so 4 stright feeds, then yoiu can start handling. so get him out for 2 mins, then 4 mins, then 6 ect ect. this maybe a long proccess but its the best when handling you BP to make him more accumlated to youself. also try to stick to a ruintine, so 1 night a week is cleaning. 1 night is feeding, 48 hours of not touchy, then 1 night of handling - gap - handling - gap - handling.
ok :)
sorry for my crappy as can be writing skills. im tired. its 2 in the aftern00n, i should be asleep grrr.
cheers,
liam

Nooo..I havnt tried to feed my bp yet i have to wait intell saturday
cuz thats what the petco lady said and i know they also wont eat inless
there like 100% comfortable. I read lots of information before i bought him.
I can care for him properly its just the handling part is the problem. o__O
Re: How to pick up bp from enclosure?
Since you just got him, I wouldn't worry about the handling part just yet, let him get settled in and and fed a few times and he (and you) should be fine.

I worry to much about my bp.lol
Re: How to pick up bp from enclosure?
I do just as Robin said and scoop em up.
However...I do not handle my snakes that often.
I take them out for a tub cleaning (usualy once a week) or I may take them out for a lil fresh air on the deck maybe....once a month for some photo ops. If that.
I don't think it is necessary as snakes are not 'social' creatures.
They don't need to be walked :giggle: or kissed and hugged on.
A snake that is left alone is far more secure and happy (for lack of better words).
jmo.
