    I see that you snake's scales (the cinny pic) are in focus.. were you accidentally focusing on them? my other thought would be that you're too close to the snake's head with the lens.. I do this all of the time and end up deleting about half of the pics I take :)
    Macro lenses rock my cardboard box. I use mine even when not stereoypically doing a "macro closeup" shot. Set it for macro with flash.. don't get tooo close.. and stunning things result.
