Getting bit is a reality, not a goal LOL. Seriously, your snake can rip out teeth and damage it's mouth from a bite and your natural instinct to jerk back. Losing a few teeth is no biggie, it happens to them naturally when hunting prey but traumatic injury from a bite can happen to their mouths, as well, of course, to your hand. Avoiding bites is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. :)

Quick question about how people get bitten in the first place: is it always from the snake striking? Because the first, and so far only bite I ever got from my ball python was when he was climbing on my arm. He just sort of gnawed on my elbow, and I didn't feel it until like several seconds later when one of his teeth pierced my epidermis. I wasn't sure if he was just trying to get a better grip to climb or whatnot. Would boas do the same - I mean, would any snake do the same? It would kind of suck to have an adult boa do the same and clamp down on my elbow...

Getting bitten is usually either from the snake beeing defensive if it feels threatened or if you smell like food (rats/mice). My hand smelled like rat so that is why I got bitten. Ive never herd of a snake doing what you said. I don't really know if other snakes do that too. You sure you didn't smell like a rat and the snake skipped the striking part and just bit?

Nope, I didn't even have any mice around, but I kind of figured he was hungry, so I fed him the next day. He's a pretty good feeder, too, and I've upgraded his meal size since when I got him a few weeks ago - it's now 1 mouse and a fuzzy, rather than just 1 mouse. I guess I just have a weird snake.

Oh yeah, and one more thing: washing your hand with a stainless steel spoon will get rid of any smells. It works for getting rid of fish smell after gutting fish, so it should get rid of thawed rat smell.

    I really can't believe I haven't been bit yet!

I always forget that I have been messing with the rats and will go to my snakes tanks and at the last....second I think "NO!!! I smell like a rat!!!!"

    lol

I am sure it will happen one day though!

My Ball python, Shorty did that to a friend of mine. She was holding him and he had his head resting on her thumb and he just tilted his head bit her..let go and went about resting there.
