Re: high school days...
I went to a Catholic private school from k-12 (2 different schools, one grammar, other high school) and in grammar/middle school marijuana was the only drug really used. As I got into high school, Freshman year started off with Xanax being the big thing and lots of pot heads and as the years went on more and more people started getting into X and still had plenty pot heads. Coke and heroine never were a problem at my school. There were the 2 or 3 out of my graduating class of 248 that admitted to doing coke at least once.
Even though Catholics should not believe in contraceptives being the right way to do things, I think catholic school should still teach safe sex using other methods besides abstinence.

This is where the real change is!
My youngest is 8...my oldest is almost 15.
I am a fairly young mother but I know for fact that my parenting skills are way better than my parents were.
They were very old school and from the backwoods. Well my step dad was backwoods.
I used to sneak out all the time and party till the sun came up and then sneak back in!
got caught 1 time.
There is not much my kids can do and not get caught.
been there and done that.
but I also have a pretty open relationship with my kids.
Communication is everything!
I am way active in their lives. and they don't mind! :D

Re: high school days...
I only graduated 2 years ago from highschool so not much has changed. The school is still extra cold so that the girls will wear more clothes (or complain that they are cold when they don't) and the drug problem is even worse. I would guess that half the upper middleclass kids (the ones with the big houses) smoke pot or do some other kind of drug, and about 35% of the remaining student body also does pot or other drugs.

The first figure is about right but it is VERY hard to find someone that does not smoke pot. In the school I'm at, at least. My old school was the same way.

Re: high school days...
I was in HS 20 years ago and the problems are the same they just get more attention now I think. I had a kid build a bomb and bring it to school in my history class. He was just suspended for 2 weeks and had to go to counseling. I was stupid and did drugs and have a friend who got shot over drugs and I don’t even live in a big city.
I tell my teenagers all the time that they didn’t build girls like that when I was a kid . I have no idea how they pay attention in school anymore. Other than that I think not much has changed only maybe the tools they use in violence....i.e...a gun instead if a knife.

Re: high school days...
At all my schools, except the Catholic prep H.S. I shortly attended, about 80% of the kids smoked pot. I have a friend who works with a lot of jam bands, and I guess all the H.S. kids now take tons of OTC pills and cough syrup and stuff. She always tells them that will kill your liver at the very least. She always asks them, "What happened to kids smoking a joint or eating some mushrooms?!"

Re: high school days...
I graduated from high school in 1977 and the only things that have changed from then to now ( I have a son who is a jr in HS ) is the style of clothes and the fact that kids today want to settle differences w/ guns instead of fists.
HS in the 70's..gee...plenty of drugs...the kids who didn't do drugs where a very small minority....Sex, plenty of sex...drinking,tons..only had to be 18 to buy beer and wine.
I look at my son and his friends and others in HS and I don't think they are is in tune w/ the world or politics like we were in the 70's or even as mature. There life has been a tad more easier than life and times in the 70's . But all in all kids are about the same.

a very good question. i think a big problem with younger parents (not all) is that they would rather be their kids' friend first and parent second. of all my friends in high school, it was the ones who had the "cool" parents that got in the most trouble, had babies, drug addictions, etc.
on the flip side, a lot of younger parents are the exact opposite, just because they want to prove the world wrong. sadly not enough of these....
as far as drugs at my school, almost everyone smoked weed. next would be preferred would be ecstasy and/or shrooms. maybe some oxycontins.... most people didn't take it any further than that but there were some who were into the heavier stuff. crank is really big in that area, so obviously some of that leaked into the schools. (some people smoked it AT school) maybe a little heroine.
as far as the sex issue.... all through high school, i was known as "The Virgin" in my group of friends. i didn't know many people who had never had sex... and i had a big school! lol. some of my friends, as much as i love them, were horrible sluts..... to the extent that they couldn't count how many. at 17 years old. i know a lot of girls who had had abortions or purposely picked fights so that someone would punch her in the stomach. horrible that they would think that was neccesary.
well, i'm just rambling now...
