I only watched the one video in the original post...although I think I've seen another or two of his in the past. That is a gorgeous gabby....absolutely stunning...and it seems to me like he takes excellent care of his animals.

The only thing that bothered me was the apparent negligence in the way he keeps them contained...the horribly cluttered room...plastic tubs...dirty floor. Looks like some serious/severe/tragic accidents waiting to happen. I hope a day comes soon when he can get into a larger room that he can keep truly secure and clean.

I've had many chats with this guy. Very nice man and has a real passion for what he does.
Watch the tour of the room, thats impressive!

I think the guy is really pretty good at handling his snakes. The deal is he knows each one very well, what their tempers are etc. The clutter is a bit of a concern for me but the rest is fine from what I saw.

    Pretty snakes, tho. =)

When Rick and I get a house, we hope to set up a snake room that is snake proof so that we can let one snake out at a time to get some supervised slither exercise...and maybe set up a "snake jungle gym" tree kind of thing. Snakey play time!

In the book that BW. Smith wrote, he explains how it can safely be done. It is done by building the regular rack. Once they add the heat, they run all wire through one hole and then make it as tight as possible and sealed. All vent holes in back are cover with some type of cloth. Then all tubs have locking lids. I know that isnt a regular BP rack but thats a hot rack. On the front, he has two doors that have 2 locks each. Also, each lid has a zip-tie on it so that while holding lid down, he can release the locked lid and then get away and take the lid off with the hook. Ill add more once I find my book.

So what if it isn't clean all the time? Say he gets one that escapes one night and is hiding. he steps foot in his small bathroom sized hot room that is cluttered with boxes and out comes the snake.

Some lovely snakes. Terrifying, but lovely.
He certainly seems to keep them well cared for and he is obviously a skilled handler. Can it really be wise to keep them in that environment? The video where he removes the angry puff adder to clean the cage instead of using dividing sections looks rather foolhardy to me.

His racks are pretty much exactly what I got for my BP that I'm getting once I actually get the enclosure back... I only bought one though, not several, and a friend bought a couple for his pines... I love them.

Those are some gorgeous snakes, but I'd be far too worried about all of the 'what ifs' that come along with owning hots... They're definately not for me no matter how beautiful they may be.

I've spoken with him quite a few times as I'm looking into owning a gabby in the near-but-not-so-near future. Every enclosure has very secure locks set up, you can see in some of the videos if he puts them back in afterwards, he locks up. He's been handling hots for well over 40 years and has only been bit once, in 1974. He knows his stuff better than anyone out there and I'd trust his enclosures, his set up, everything over someone with what appears to be a "safer" set-up. His way is actually one of the best, especially for housing hots.

Keep in mind he has 100+ hots in that room, if he made some extravagant enclosure for all of them, he'd need an entire house. His videos are great though and are extremely informative, great guy!
