I mean if the probe is on the hot side and the controller is up off the ground on the cool side the your not getting an accurate cool side temp.
I'm going to put this theory to the test tonight (@ work..can't do it now :(). and i'm not really all that worried about my cool side being spot on accurate. I'm worried about burns. and, imo, putting the unit on the warm substrate is simply saying yes, the *ambient* temp is ~93. but the ground (assuming this is belly heat we're using...) will be much hotter in order to make the ambient temps 93. Securing the unit or the probe on the substrate is useless for me. my snakes like to move their substrate around and they end up on the bottom of the tub anyway.
Re: How to Read Acurite Thermonitor
I put my unit on the cool side of the enclosure, propped up in the front corner so I can see it easily....then tuck the probe up under the hide on the warm side. That's where the snake spends 99.9% of her time when she's on the warm side, and that's where the heating element is, so that's the temp I want to have the most accurate bead on.
That's just what I do. Not saying it's the only right way. ;)

dont be ashamed i did the same thing lol

and since i bought two i have the same acurite. as in the picture, the probe is on the right side and the controler is in the cage mounted in the middle of the tank, and i also have another one with just the indoor out door temp and no humidy reader ( I use that probe to read the kool side and the device is out side of the tank, would this work i am getting good reading so far warmside is reading 87 cool side 78 and ambient air is like 82
Re: How to Read Acurite Thermonitor
I have mine on a little suction cup stuck to the side to the glass over one of the hides. I have the probe going down under the substrate on the UTH. I buried the remaining cord in substrate beside his water dish.
You read it like so:

Hope this helps! :)
Re: How to Read Acurite Thermonitor
so probe on the thermometer is more accurate then the console for reading the belly heat. the problem im having is my warm side is a good 90-93 but the cool side (read from the console) sits at 70-75. so since this 70-75 ambiant, the belly heat should be higher then that?
i have 2 UTHs, one on my warm side and one in the middle/cool sideish. the cool one is on a dimmer for know till i get a thermostat.
Re: How to Read Acurite Thermonitor
turn the dimmer up more (open) to allow more voltage through to get the cool side temps up around 80. when you get the temp straight, tape the dimmer so it won't move/adjust.
i too put the probes on the warm end and the unit on the cool side, so i can see it. good thermostats help alot in keeping the temps right on!

Re: How to Read Acurite Thermonitor
I'm another one who keeps the unit on the cool side (I velcro it to the side of the enclosure at ground level inside) and run the probe to sit on top of the substrate inside the warm side hide.
I got tired of the snakes turning the unit over, velcro works like a charm!
