I didn't think Eukanuba was actually considered "crap food."

Ya know what, I take offense to that. I have one cat who is older and while she eats mostly dry food, she does get canned on rare occasions. In fact, I am insulted enough to stop my post now b/c I know I will say things I regret later.

Re: Pet food recall...!
I'm sorry if I offended you
I'm not talking about the fact that it's canned food
Canned food can be good for some animals because of the water content
It's the brands that seem to keep having problems

Re: Pet food recall...!
here is some info I take into a count when buying food for my cats and ferrets (since they are both obligated carnivors)
from www.catinfo.org
Learn How To Read a Pet Food Ingredient Label
*
The words “natural” or “premium” or "veterinarian recommended" are not necessarily indicative of high quality.
*
Contrary to what is often believed, many, if not all, of the so-called prescription diets sold in veterinary hospitals are not formulated for optimal health of a carnivore. Many of these products contain corn, wheat, and soy which have no logical place in your cat's diet. Many of them also contain by-products as the main - and often only - source of protein. It is also important to note that Hill’s – the maker of Science Diet – continues to use extremely questionable preservatives such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin in many of their products. Other companies have abandoned the practice of using these chemicals as preservatives – opting for more natural and safer methods. Unfortunately, many veterinarians are very poorly educated in the area of nutrition. Too often their recommendations are taken from the pet food industry which does not always have your cat’s best interest in mind when formulating their products. In most instances, you will be paying far more money than you should be for the low quality ingredients that many of these prescription products contain.
*
Look for a muscle meat (preferably, not an organ meat like liver) as the first ingredient. A muscle meat will be listed as “chicken,” or “turkey,” etc. not “chicken by-products” or “chicken by-product meal,” or “chicken broth” or "liver". “Chicken meal” is technically a muscle meat but the term “meal” denotes that it has been rendered (cooked for a long time at very high temperatures) and is lower quality than meat that has not been as heavily processed. A "meal" product is more commonly found in dry foods. By-products can include feet, intestines, feathers, egg shells, etc. and are much less nutritious than meat. See here for more on by-products.
*
Grains should be absent or, at least, only minimally present in the diet. This means if they are present, they should not be among the first three ingredients. Corn, wheat and soy are thought to be common allergens (as is yeast) and also cause a rapid rise in blood sugar when compared to other grains such as rice, oats or barley so it is important to choose a food that does not contain corn, wheat, soy, or yeast.

Sorry but the foods listed are not all crap foods. Don't be too sure of yourself. Even the best foods can have something happen. Even in the foods you eat. Or don't you remember the spinach being recalled last month?

Re: Pet food recall...!
Pretty shocked as well to see both what I feed my cat and dogs on there. Pretty scary! We don't have the bags that the food came in since we keep their foods in tins, so we just threw away all of their food we had.

Re: Pet food recall...!
ok, I have read a lot of stuff about dog and cat food (before this whole recall mess happened) and so I know what is good, mediocre, and terrible.I want to know what you all feed your dogs and cats? I have two dogs and one cat. The big dog eats anything. the little dog is soooo picky sometimes i feed the bugger with a spoon to eat. I am probably just making him more spoiled but I worry that he doesn't eat enough.
I have fed th dogs eukanuba, wellness (they hated that), flint river ranch (little guy wouldnt touch it), california natural (no go), and solid gold (nope).
I had some success with eagle pak but right now they are eatng purina dog chow...aka....trash. SIgh, and my little dog LOVES it.....why does he like this crappy filler????anyone know why?
And if I had time, money, and patience, I WOULD cook for my dog or setup a raw diet but seriously, who does that AND has a job AND has a life??????

Re: Pet food recall...!
I feed Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul to my cats and the Kitten version to my ferrets.
I wish I had a dog. :(

My sister adopted a German Shepherd from a woman who couldn't keep her any longer. This woman would boil a whole chicken every day...bone it...and give the dog the entire chicken!! (Sans bones, of course) Every single day! YUCK!
The dog is now under veterinary care and on a strict, healthy diet. Poor thing!
