I thawed out a rat a little to good a few weeks ago... I picked it up by it's tail out of the hot hot water.... and it's tail's skin slid right off the bone. So I'm standing there with the tail skin of the rat in the hand and a rat with it's tail bone exposed paying on the floor. I about lost my lunch.
Other then that, I've had my corn snake "pop" some f/t rat fuzzies that send blood and guts squirting all over the place and himself. Nothing like having to wash off a snake after they eat and that happens. So gross!
Allison you have now added to the phrase "give me some skin" :partyon: :partyon:

Re: Gross Gross Gross!
I let mine sit for a few hours until it's thawed, then I set it on a heat pad (I have one on the top of my BP's tub) to warm up all the way through. Then I feed it to him :) No mouse poppage for me yet. We're on feeding #5.

That is just aweful!!! I would totally have lost my lunch!!! :puke2:
I will just stick with live! I stick it in there and once they have constricted it...I go on and let them eat quietly. ;)

Re: Gross Gross Gross!
I bought a frozen rat last night, but the size was not right (first time I bought from this supplier). My dog was THRILLED. THRIIIIIIIIIIILED. So, if you ever have a boiled rat issue, etc - remember, the dogs would be happy as can be for such a treat.. :carrot:

I take it out of the freezer and set it on top of my snake's tub. He gets a sniff of it and comes out and gets his appetite ready. After a half hour or so I put it in hot water (but not so hot I cannot put my fingers in it for a few seconds) for about 10 minutes. Then I refresh the hot water a second time and soak another 10-15 minutes until it's totally warm and thawed.
then it's feeding time!
I like to get the mouse wet rather than put it in a baggie because I figure the extra moisture in his meal is good for him. plus it lubricates :P

All of the above gross stories is one of the very reasons I switched to live.
No muss, no fuss.
No matter how I warmed the rodents I use to give Ozzy, he strikes so darn hard they would always explode. Just to gross cleaning him and the cage of rodent guts.

Re: Gross Gross Gross!
I had my first rat bust a few weeks ago when I was feeding my boa. I left it out overnight to thaw and was using a blowdryer to warm it up and went to feed a few minutes later. It took me a sec to realize why it was not leaving the tray when I picked it up by the tail. An XXL rat is quite nasty!
