Re: He ate!...a chick!
Having worked in a research lab for quite awhile and having worked with rodents and poultry, I invite you to do a comparrison on the intestinal tract of each and get back to me with what you find. :D If you'd like me to save you the time and years of disection, you'll find that poultry has many times the parasitic load on average. Beyond that, many parasitic organisms that thrive in poultry also do so in reptiles as thier physiology is closer than that of rodents. Another HUGE problem in poultry is mites, which are also transferrable to reptiles. But hey, what do I know, I've only done medical research on these for 10m years or so, and only dissected a few thousand of each, and that was when they were raised in laboratory conditions which are far more sterile than a hatchery. YMMV, but it's not a good idea IMO.

my bp has eaten a few chicks, and he is fine, no mites or whatever.

Re: He ate!...a chick!
I'm not saying that it will happen to everyone that feeds chicks occasionally. If you bought them from an immaculate hatchery, you may go years without a problem. I'm saying that it's like playing with fire. Sooner or later you'll get burnt. With high dollar snakes, or even valued pets, it's just a plain bad idea. Can the same thing happen with rodents? Sure, if you buy from shoddy companies, but it's comparable to the difference between playing with a match, or a flamethrower :D Like I said though, YMMV, so do as you wish, but you won't see reputable breeders feeding chicks. :D If it was a good idea, I think we'd see alot more people "in the know" feeding them since they are like 10 cents each and readily available by the thousands, lol. :sabduel:
