i was actually just trying to be polite and not have the banner take the user away from your my-space page. this way your page is still open in the background or in another tab. if you don't want the new window to "pop up" you can choose for links to open in new tabs (in firefox--not sure if you can do that in explorer).
generally speaking, the rule of netiquette is to have off-site links open in new windows.

Really? I frequent(ed) web developer sites that follow web standards, and everyone said the opposite... ;)
By the way, I use Safari and I know I can open in new tabs.
Maybe I should've saved this discussion for a web standards thread.
Re: Myspace Banner for BP.net!
think of it this way: if you ran a web site that made you income and you had banners or other ads on that site, would you want those banners to take the users that bring you income away from your site? or would you want those banners to open up in their own, new windows so that your site was still open too? so that when the user was finished looking at the advertiser's web site they would see your site again, possibly become interested in something else on your site which could provide you with more income?
Re: Myspace Banner for BP.net!
If they were really interested in the site, the back button's available. I don't know.. my mindset is that you shouldn't force the user to have a new window open up. If they want it to, they can, but otherwise I find it cumbersome to have multiple windows open on my desktop.
Re: Myspace Banner for BP.net!
outta site outta mind though. you gotta do what you can to remind people, keep them on your site, keep them looking.
i know i couldn't live without tabs, so that i can have multiple windows open at the same time. i always hated it when an off-site link opened up on the same window making me lose the original site and making me have to hit the back button a bunch of times trying to find the originating site. i can see how it is somewhat a matter of preference, but there are also basic rules of marketing that go along with the reasons to open off-site links in new windows. (can you tell i've worked in web design for a while now? ;) )
* note to all: if you would prefer that your my-space banner NOT open in a new window, just remove this part of the code "target=_blank". :)
