Here's the pic of the premade - I like the rubber covering the end.

I have it on a dimming day/night thermostat and aside form the fact I have to set the t-stat to 88 to get the thermometer to read 93.6 (they are less than 2 cm apart!!) I have no quibbles with the stuff.

I spoke with the guys at Calorique last night and they gave me a few prices:

    $350 for 100 ft of 11"
    $40 for tool
    40c for clip

They will ship via US Postal Service - approx cost $25.

A reasonable price and gives the flexibility of connecting several rows in a rack to the one control.

Yes it does - but so does a 4 gang extension socket. :) Which was how I was planning on doing it originally.

100 foot!! what size of rack are you building man? :P

Your idea however is a lot more flexible in that the mats can be cut to any length. :) I don't know if I will be building enough racks to justify the cost of the crimper though.

I have had another idea that may complicate my build - adding a dimmer switch inline with each matt. The main advantage of this would be the ability to correct for the differences between bottom and top shelves caused by convection and that each shelf could be turned down individually (aside from the one with the temp probe) to cool down snakes for breeding.

The main thing I am trying to do is avoid having to cut connectors and sockets off new gear so I will be basically making a wire/socket loom built into the rack itself with the thermostats/matts just plugging straight in.

I have a bad habit of trying to make things as modular and interchangeable as possible.

Their postage seems quite reasonable and the stuff itself seems the biz.
