    Maybe you can do a found dog ad, very vague in description and ask that anyone who may have lost a dog to call you and describe him to you, then you would could tell if it's truly someone who's looking for a lost dog.

    Of course, keep an eye out for the lost dog ads too! Might also want to ask the vet to see if he might have a chip implant when he goes in for his vet check, as I think most of them have the scanners, or can at least suggest where you could get him scanned.
