Re: Handling routines/fun stuff to do
I usually have my BP around my neck while I'm writing papers or doing my physics homework. She's pretty lazy most of the time and doesn't mind hanging out for longer periods of time (some days) but when she's anxious or nervous, her cage is >1ft away from my desk (silly small dorm rooms). This is my first snake, and I'm really suprised at how calm she is.

this is probably a dumb question but here goes:

I handle my BP in the basement, both because his cage is there but also because I have cats I can shut out of the room. The floor is carpet over concrete, and the concrete is pretty cold (the room is 72 but the floor feels cold to the touch)

Augie my snake seems to want to crawl down to the floor but I have been keeping him up on the couch and other furniture in the room. Do you think it would be unhealthy for him to spend time on the carpet with the big temp difference? I have been assuming it's not a good idea but I really don't know for sure.

How much does your BP weigh? the thing with thermoregulation is that the animals with lower surface-area-to-volume-ratio (larger guys) will loose heat slower than those with a higher ratio (smaller guys). When you compare to heat gain and loss, reptiles can gain heat relitavely faster than they can lose it. As long as he's not sitting on the floor for hours, i don't think that it would be much of a problem if he's down there for a max of 7-10 min.

the first handling after feeding is rapidly becoming the 'let's see if I can poop on stuff before mom notices I'm about to go' handling session of the week :)

got a poop and a pee today just when I had given up on getting any and walked away from the emergency poop newspaper

anyway, I'm glad his digestion is good :banned1:

this is my second week handling my BP and I have really noticed a difference in his behavior! he is calming down rapidly I think....much more at ease with me and his explorations have lost their 'frantic' tone and are now much more about checking something, returning to me, then checking out something else.
he is much less head shy now also.

    very enjoyable animal :)
