One of the biggest myths about emeralds is that they are aggressive. That may be true about unhealthy imports that aren't established. Emeralds, in my experience, are pretty laid back, except for feeding time. At night most will assume a classic "hunting" pose and are not to be approached. During the day they are asleep, but can be waken up for outdoor exercise sessions. The secret is to have a removable perch so you are not "fighting" the snake to remove it from the enclosure. Make sure the environment you handle them in is suitable for their requirements as well.

Interesting. There's several species that are wrongly thought of as being nasty.. lol. Bloods are one of them, and I know first hand that it's a myth since mine are very laid back.

I have seen several calm emmys, but I just thought they were unusual.

Do they need high humidity? I read they have issues with becoming constipated (poor things)

Humidity is kept between 70-80% during the day. Initially at night the humidity peaks as the NTL temps kick in, then they taper off to around 55-65%. Most people think "rainforest" animal, but in reality they tend to be higher up in the canopy or often found hanging out over waterways. Big difference in humidity from the "closeness" of the ground level in a rainforest.

The rule is no more than 3 meals without a bowel movement. Adults are fed on a 14-21 day schedule, while neonates are fed about every 10 days. Prolapse is a very naughty word when it comes to emeralds, but good hydration and the 3 meal rule seem to work and we haven't had any issues.
