Re: calling on all rabbit owners!!!
When we had a big bunny to feed I found out sort of by accident that my local big grocery store was quite happy to give me a ton of free greens for the bun bun. Turns out that if I (and a bunch of other pet owners) showed up at the store at a certain time on a specific day we could have our pick of fresh veggies that were culls from the stuff being put out for sale. None of it was rotten. It would be things like the outside leaves of cabbage and lettuce, carrots that were not straight and "pretty"...stuff like that. They were quite happy to see it used up and the pet owners that hauled it away got free food and their employees didn't have to haul it out to the dumpster. Give a few grocery stores a call, speak to their Produce Manager and I bet you'll find one that will do too. It certainly helps with the food budget and our bunny loved the variety each week.
Re: calling on all rabbit owners!!!
what kind of food are you buying? We feed 7 rabbits for 3 weeks with a 50 bag of food from Tractor Supply ($8 a bag) and vegies from the grocery store a few times a week.
Re: calling on all rabbit owners!!!
Here's a link to a site that's my bunny bible, they have pretty much everything on there. :)
www.rabbit.org
Also, you may be overfeeding him, hay isn't that expensive and it should be the vast majority of your bun's diet. My rabbits only get 1/3 of a cup of pellets once a day each, then a constant supply of timothy hay (alfalfa is best only for baby rabbits, otherwise it makes them gassy). It does depend on how much the rabbit weighs though, bigger rabbits may require a bit more than that but not much. Hay is the healthiest thing for em, with pellets as a supplement and everything else as an occassional treat. :)
