agreed, keep the temps/humidity right, add another hide and you should be good...That tank would look sick with a couple of big vines drooping down from the top! and maybe just one big grapevine branch extending towards the top, but secure so it doesn't wobble around...I'm sorry but I love the natural habitat looking tanks lol...

For ball pythons, floor space is what its all about. Chances are, all of the heat in the cage is just simply rising up into the unused area of the cage and escaping outwards. You may have made a visually appealing upgrade, but in a sense, you are no better off now than you were with the 10 gallon. At least the 10 gallon had a rectangular shape, offering a better thermal gradient than a square shaped floor does. That cage can work, but isn't exactly "ideal" for ball pythons.

Giving criticism without any substance does nothing to answer the question posed and doesn't reflect well on you either. If you are going to disagree, mentioning how and why you would do things differently would be a much more valuable contribution. A statement like that does nothing but put the original poster on the defensive.

Although it's not the ideal tank for a ball python it should be sufficient for a while. It was very nice of your parents to think of your snake though and purchase a tank for your buddy. It was a very nice gesture on their part... Besides if you ever decide you want to get into gtp's your all ready set! lol...

Eh.. I have seen those cages; my friend has some at her store.. but they are not really ideal for a BP; just a lot of unnecessary arboreal space. If you are a tad entrepreneural, you could sell that cage for a nifty sum, buy a sterilite tub for your snake, and be in some money to boot! I never advocate creating climbing space or branches for a BP; they are not designed to be arboreal; they are relatively clunky and heavy-bodied when compated to tree-dwellers, and could get injured if they fall.

I have to add my :2cent: . I have the 18x18x18 version. My snake was unhappy with this from the start. I put a 1/8 plastic covering on the top with a 4 in hole and a CLE on the top for ambient temps. I have a UTH covering 1/4 the bottom left corner. My temps allow for a 92/80 hot/cold gradient from one corner to the other. I have two hides one in each of the corners. I can keep a humidity of 46% to 58% naturally, and with spraying I can get it up to 74%.


However, often he just goes crazy running all over the sides and climbing up the walls to try to poke out the top. It is like he is practicing for the Snake Olympics.

I have just bought a tub setup and as soon as my Herpstat shows up - he's in there!!!

The 18x18x18 was ok until he got to about 21" long. Now if he is not in a hide, he is all over the place. Makes me feel like he is an expecting father waiting outside the delivery room...

i just stoped feeding him every week and switched to every two weeks. he's over a year old now and is growing at an excellent rate. i do know that the tank isnt really for bp's but it was a gift from the rents. i have to show them i use it lol. you know how it goes. but i plan on addin stuff to it. im creative, i should come up with somethin interesting and appropriate. but other than that yea, things have been great. thanks to all of you here, who helped me getting started with this bp.

i def agree with the natural look idea. im open for any idea's or thoughts. i think ill just stick with this tank for a little while. dont wanna make the parents seem like im ungrateful lol.

the tank looks really nice but its not ideal for a BP....better to have a really long tank than a high one for a BP.....and there should be a 2nd hide :rockon:
