As far as I know they wont harm anything else but that is only what I hve heard so I could be wrong.
Tarantulas, and Inverts have there own kind of mites.
Re: Help!! Is this mites?
Thanks for the pics, nice to know what we're lookin for.
Re: Help!! Is this mites?
no problem... not meany people know what they really look like. I didnt know untill I was at someones house and I saw black dots running all over the poor snake. I then went home and had to disinfect myself my cloths and my car.
They give me the heebie jeebies.
BTW the photos was taken with a microscope with a Digital opix drive attached to the computer from the scope.
Re: Help!! Is this mites?
They're pretty easy to identify when they're floating in the water, too.
Plant fungus gnats can be white, but I don't see why they'd want to be on the snake....unless the snake is in a viv that has live plants and the plants are infected(????) Is that the word I want? Contaminated? *sigh* :rolleye2: U get the idea.......

Re: Help!! Is this mites?
No, no plants near him. They are aphids, I know what those look like. This was super tiny, so tiny we almost didn't see it. We are going to change his substrate, sterilize his viv and give him a bath tomorrow. Then we are going to put him back on newspaper. He has been on coconut bedding. We are doing that just in case its something that came from the bedding.
Will that do it?
Re: Help!! Is this mites?
if its beige/white it cant be a mite and whatever it is probably isnt a danger to the snake but just get it off the snake asap

It couln't possibly be a very tiny baby spider could it Mina? Also there's a ton of white mites that I hate to say are quite common in most kitchens (flour mites, etc.)

Re: Help!! Is this mites?
It could be a mite. There are many species of mites. I am in the arachnid hobby and the white/biege mites are the ones we fear the most. They will get into a tarantulas lungs and mouthparts and eventually kill it unless you can get rid of them by using a predatory mite tha also happens to be white/beige. that one has a name that is something like hypoasis miles but I am pretty sure the fisrt half of that is spelled wrong lol. i don't know if they can harm a reptile but I did have them on my tokay gecko for a short time. For reptiles it is easier to get rid of these mites. Just use a bleach/water solution to clean the tank and accessories and you can also use a mite powder or spray from the pet store. I can't use these on my spiders because it would kill them also but I can say with confidence that mites are not always black.
Re: Help!! Is this mites?
Sooo interesting....
I had a guy at a shop flip over one of the giant Millipedes? and show me it's "cleaners"... little bugs that it "came" with that kept it clean. Was that total Poo?
