I only keep my males with females which seems to avoid any testosterone behavior from cropping up. If you rotate them around, your male shouldn't have to be alone.

ya jamie, i agree with you. it's nice for them to be with another rattie. do you have any non-breeding older females that he can bunk with?

Not at this point. All my breeder females are still young. He has never had this problem up until the last few days. Weird..

Ah... that 'splains it. I'm like you when it comes to the planning department, but I only have two males so it's easy to keep them apart. Maybe I'm overworking the little gigolos, but I haven't heard any complaints.

My males (1 retired breeder, 3 active breeders) all bunk together Jamie. I just pull whoever is next in line out and he goes in with his duo or trio of females for a few weeks till his job is done so to speak, then back into the male enclosure. I haven't had any problems other than the aforementioned excitement if he smells like the ladies. The incident with the bad fight was started by an adult male that was unable to breed due to a testicle injury and he was just plain mean natured. Hopefully your males will all settle down. Sometimes it can just be a personality thing with rats. I have some rats (mostly females) that just don't like another rat for some odd rattie reason and they can't share an enclosure or the brawl is on, put them with another rat and it's all snuggles.
