Nikonian here. Always have been and will continue to be one...only wish they would provide a depth of preview button in their lower ends.

Get a Nikon DSLR (D50 [6.2 MP], D70 [6.2 MP], D80 [10.2 MP], D200 [10.2 MP], etc.) and don't look back. Seriously, they are really nice cameras. Check out the cameras on Nikon's website. Like nathanledet said, I'm a tad biased as my dad has a D70, but there's no question on the quality of these cameras (except some of the cheaper point-and-shoot ones).

Do you have to have the lenses for the Nikons?

If you are buying an SLR or a DSLR retail, then it will come with a standard lens. If you wanna get serious as a photographer, then you will have to invest in some decent lenses.

Heh, there's a super telephoto lens that has a minimum focus range of 18 feet. Eighteen feet away to be able to focus!! Wow. It does zoom in a LOT though. And, it's huge, like what nathanledet is saying.

edit: check out this lens. Minimum focus range: 18.4 feet, weight: 10 POUNDS. That is HUGE.
