Reptile mites are typically black, but when engorged with blood, they can be dark red.

If you got to a petshop that has mites, you could get them from there. They can hitchhike home on cloths, rodents bought as food, etc.

What is really a pain, is when mite eggs hatch then crawl all over. They leave the bin and travel until they find a food source. If you treat and get rid of them from your snakes bin, you can still get them back as one who has been roaming around the house finds it's way back into the reptile room. This doesn't happen often, but it can. It's always good to keep your eyes open for signs of mites and treat asap.
