I absolutely have. I will see if I can find some links for you.

Shredded newspaper would probably be really messy to clean up after...if you are concerned about security (as you mentioned using substrate for burrowing), you could just use newspaper on the bottom and throw in a bunch of balls of crumpled newspaper. That's a trick that works for stubborn feeders, and certainly couldn't hurt for an otherwise healthy snake.

Paper towels swell in the stomach and cause blockages while newspaper (if ingested) is more easily passed ... Also, newspaper comes in much larger sheets and is harder to swallow than paper towels which are easily torn and swallowed if caught on a tooth or on part of the prey item.

I've been lucky enough to sit in on a couple of surgeries invloving freak ingestions ... two paper towel cases (1 ball python and 1 corn snake) and a boa that ingested a kitched hand towel by accident.

When I used to work at a pet store, some guy was bringing in his burm to trade for something...pulled it out of the box he brought it in, and what do you know...half of the towel that was in there was down its throat. It had begun swallowing it for some reason during transport. That was fun to remove!

Speaking of snakes swallowing strange things did anyone see that article in Reptiles where the girls snake would try and eat it's tail??
They even had a pic of it with half it's tail end down it's throat. Bizzare!

A buddy of mine has a sand boa shipped to him and that's how he found it (dead) when he opened the bag.
