I found some babies in the drawer i moved the first batch of beetles to, so now i have a better idea of how long it takes to lay the eggs and for them to hatch. From the looks of it there is no point in having the beetles seperated by age because there is no way the first plan of them dying out before the eggs hatch is going to be right. From here on i will just keep them all together (as many as size of drawers allows) and move them every two weeks or so. for now i am keeping the larva seperate to see how fast they grow. I have ran into a few problems though, well...not really problems, but things that need to be changed. I had all the drawers filled to the same level (about 1/2 to 3/4 full). The larva seem to stay buried all the time, so they need the depth. The problem is i really need to be able to combine drawers of babies to save space, but i have no way to seperate the babies from the corn meal at this small size(the sifter i use works well for everthing esle, but the babies are too small). I can pour two drawers together, but that is about too full. The idea i had and will try from now on, is to put the beetles in much less cornmeal, so that when the babies hatch, i can put several drawers together with out it being so full. I dont expect there to be any problem with keeping all sizes together, but i will probably keep them seperated by what will fit through the sifter and what wont. I'll probably also sort them at one more level above that, but im not sure if i will or just how i will yet. I'll post some new pics soon to show the size increase.
