    Jen,
Backing for the rack is a great idea. Not only does it provide a backstop for your tubs, but it also helps to hold in heat, and also adds to the sturdiness of the rack. It helps to keep it square, and put less stress on the screws. The only problem I have found from spacing the shelves the way you did, is if you get a little sagging of the shelves, you may have tight fitting tubs. If you do it again for another rack, I suggest making spacers that are the same height as the tubs you are using, and placing the spacers between each shelf as you are screwing them together. Also, your shelves can get to close together if your tubs flex a bit while the top shelf is sitting on the tub, prior to it being screwed up. I hope that makes sense.
All in all though, I would have to say congratulations on a job well done. And, tell Mark he did great, but prepare to build some more. Once you see how cheap your own racks can be built for, it's hard to stop building them.

Tim, the tubs fit pretty tight. I actually wouldn't mind if they become a little tighter-fitting; it'd help my peace of mind a little. :)

very nice work. i prefer to build mine with the tops included. this way i don't get tagged when pulling them out, and the don't wiggle their way out if it is not in all the way.

Here they are 6.50 for a 41 qt sterilite tub!
Nice rack you have there. I am building a new rack and the tubs will slide out opposite of how yours do.
