I have 2 het pied males, and 1 has the "marker" and the other does not. I would not put too much stock in it. As others have said, buy from a reputal breeder ...... or small breeder that you trust .....

Oh i got so excited when i saw the belly marks and somebody said that they are pied markings. I thought i had gotten a deal and they thought mine was just a normal, but it really was a het. pied. haha.
Anyways, yeah, im not sure how to tell, but im sure if you go to a good breeder, they will give you what you ask for. When you do get one, i am curious to know if the belly marks are there, and if you see a diffrence between them and normals.

if there was such a thing as a "genetic pied marker" than they would be considered codominant:)

    Smulkin,

Your lines are too close together for the pied het indicator. You only have the one big middle scale between them, ideally there should be all three belly scales between. Also, a little light as far as how thick and dark the lines are.

But I suspect there are some good look-alikes that aren't het pied that do fully match the indicator seen in many het pieds. It's not perfect, the question is if the appearance in pied lines is statistically significant and if so if it's related to being het pied. I think it is. To me it looks like the pied appearance starting from the belly, on homozygous pieds it just moves farther up the sides and over the back in places. I believe there is good precedence for "recessive" traits to have sporadic co-dominant tendencies - see cinnamon and puzzle burms for examples. The text book concept of a 100% recessive mutation may not always apply so neat in the real world.

Randy...would this girl fit your description of the het pied "marker"? Just curious. She was sold to me as 100% normal, but it was mentioned that she may have the het pied "marker".
