Re: Mice!!!
Finally got out to the rodent shed for some pics.
The pied trait is recessive, and makes nice crosses with color morphs. Here is a black pied
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...e/HPIM1010.jpg
and a blonde pied
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...e/HPIM1014.jpg
and my favorite, the orange pieds AKA creamsicle
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...e/HPIM1004.jpg
I liked this shot in one of the grow-out tubs. This guy is an orange silky (very shiny!:sunny:more shiny than the pics show) in the midst of a sea of black and white. Silky also seems to be recessive.

This little guy seems to be confused, I've never seen the black and the blonde on an mouse before, and on a pied too!!

I love half-and-half faces like this guy
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...e/HPIM1023.jpg
and lastly, can anyone name this mouse?

If you said peromyscus (deer mouse), you're right!!! These guys don't produce much, just a few pinks per litter, but they are good for scenting lab pinkies for picky baby colubrids, and they are fun to have around. They are a domesticated strain but they are still quick and they chew A LOT!!

Re: Mice!!!
Very cool Evan! I learned something about mouse genetics tonight! I do have some pieds, so now I gotta do some selective breeding with them! I also love that orange silky. Something about that color is just waay cool!
I've been curious about deer mice for a while too. But I need production!

Re: Mice!!!
I must have the world's most boring PetCo. They never have anything other than albino mice (rats are always self or hooded). Very cute mice! Those silver ones just glow!

That's actually where I got all of the mice in these pics. Of course, they buy their small animals from local suppliers.
Steve
We dont have a petco.... Mansfield/Ontario just recently got a petsmart for heavens sake... and thats only after I have lived here almost 4 years! May be another 4 years before I see a petco around here, but then again, I wont be here in 4 years to see it. I dont plan on sticking around in Ohio, wanting to go back home to Illinois.

Yeah, they're definitely not great for production. They need a much higher protien diet than the lab mice, and I supplement thier lab block with sunflower seeds and high protien cat food. They even get roaches and crickets occasionally, which they LOVE!!! I got these from a friend who has had a colony going for years, and I looked into getting some more to diversify the gene pool (I only have a very small breeding group) and they are very costly. I think they were about $35-50 each (depending on strain) plus shipping. I'm glad I got mine for free :D .
I just got some swiss-websters too, which will be nice as far as food production, but the white albinos are just kinda boring. Here's a shot of the starter colony I just got this week.

Most are getting close to breeding size, so I will likely set up a few breeding tubs of them next week. I will still keep the colored ones going, but these guys should keep me stocked with food a little more regularly.

Don't worry Judy, this one is a keeper for sure!! I really want to see how this trait is inherited. I've had a couple strange things pop up in my colony before including what I call a "poodle". They are mostly hairless, but have hair on thier head, butt, and legs. The wierd thing is that thier hair grows in as they age, so the adults look normal. Mice are fun!! :D
