    The cheapest PIT tag scanner I've seen is around $500. All of our leopard sharks were tagged at the aquarium we got them from, but we don't even have a reader. Our consulting Vet does, but it is still tough to get a read on them, as we have to net them because you have to be right over the chip for it to scan.

    The chips merely contain a number, they cannot have any other data on them. That number is then linked to information you can access elsewhere.

    I think chipping high end animals is a great idea. If for nothing but peace of mind.

    Jeffer's Pet Supply has the HomeAgain scanner for $225 and their chips usually run around $20, plus the $14 fee when you register the chip with HomeAgain.

    Avid and HomeAgain are the two big names in the pet chipping industry; I believe there's another company but can't remember the name. I'm not sure what an Avid scanner costs. Older scanners will not read a competitor's chip, but will tell you there is an unreadable chip present. Newer scanners will read both brands.

    Boaphile offers implant chips for their snakes as well..I don't recall the cost though.
