Most Ridiculous Item of the Day

OK, as a former education provider, I can honestly say, thats just rediculous....

As a parent, I can also say this: here at the schools my kids attend (2 different districts) there is no such thing as a field trip form that gets signed for EVERY field trip, therefor, I as a parent, dont know half the time what field trips are being taken, to where or why..until my kid comes home and tells me he went on a field trip. At the beginning of this school year, the schools had local parents signing permission slips that are ineffect until the end of this school year, giving permission for staff of the school to take the kids to a field trip of the educators choosing..... to be honest, it has been a few years since I remember getting a permission slip that needed signing for EVERY trip my kids take... so in the parents defense, maybe they did not want thier kids to see nude paintings at all, maybe it was a case such as what my kids school does and the parents were not well enough informed of the educators choices for field trips.... schools are really lacking in sharing info with parents when it comes to things b/c of the blanket "permission forms".

Think of it this way.... we should really know what the educators are choosing to do as far as field trips where, when, etc... because just last year, my sons teacher thought a field trip to a local bingo hall was educational... NOT!

the only permission slip I recently had to sign for both of my kids, was for what thier schools calls "sex ed.", along with the form, came a pamphlet describing what the "sex ed." curriculum was to be taught and it also gave examples from the texts they teach "sex ed." from.... funny thing, it is not even "sex ed." as they call it, it is nothing more than a hygene class for the younger kids where they get samples of hygene products and how to use info, and for the older kids it was hygene, basics on abstinence from sex and safe sex, along with handing out condoms right after the class in fact..

In our school system we have to sign permission slips for every field trip. I like to know exactly what is going on and what the purpose of the trip is. Heck our preschoolers are walking to a park, and we have to sign permission slips since they have to leave the school grounds. Of course I wouldn't have any issue with children seeing classical art. Of course newer stuff would make me nervous, but how hard is it to call a museum to ask about it's exhibits or just stopping in and double checking if you aren't sure. It seems like everyone can't take responsibilty for simple things. It's just ridiculous.

As a parent who has had kids in MANY different districts in as many different states....some schools do the "blanket permission slip" at the beginning of the year, and some schools continue to have separate permission slips for individual field trips. But even when I signed the all-inclusive one at the beginning of the year, we were still made well aware in advance of any time the kids were to be taken somewhere and what the trip was going to include.


It's hard for me to fathom that a parent who is SO over-protective and controllish as to freak out about their kid seeing classical art would not also be well aware of exactly what the school plans to do with their children.

Just from the little information offered (and there's ALWAYS far more to the story than we see in some printed news article).....I would bet it's more a case of one or two parents having some sort of personal issues with the teacher and used this opportunity as an excuse to act "outraged" and "morally offended"...

The thing that bothers me most about this is that a school board will bow to the pressure of one or two parents and take drastic measures that affect whole classes...whole schools...and even whole districts....merely based on a couple of "put out" parents.

Around here, the kids have just a week notice for field trips(along with that sometimes comes a note from the teacher saying-"oh by the way we have this field trip and _________ needs $x.xx for this" and it is usually right after you get through a long weekend and have little cash till you get to a bank..just 3 days notice at times), the teachers and schools here tend to not have thier ducks in line and cant seem to plan for anything. I have actually called the school board and complained that I cannot get a list of field trips from the kids schools so I know whats going on ahead of time... sadly, the school boards answer to my problem is that field trips are left up to the teachers, yet at the schools, we are told that they have trouble keeping up with this stuff so they no longer go through monthly and get the teachers "field trip schedules" and print them in the monthly district newspaper because the teachers are currently unable to plan too far ahead due to weather and other forces of life.. they tell you to log onto the schools website (which is down 50% of the time when it really counts) and lookup the teachers email and email the teacher for thier "field trip schedule"..sadly, once you get to thier site and log on with the parent ID access info and password, half the teachers dont have email addresses (usually its the one you really need) available...you get them on the phone, you hear "it is too hard to mess with the computers" or "I am not computer literate" so I dont have an email.....mind you, my sons school is the worst by far.

Yes, so this begs the question..and these ppl are teaching my children and they cant run a stinking computer to check for email?....bologna! how do they type out thier stuff? Sounds more like laziness to me, or the fact they dont want the parent to contact them-for anything! When I was teaching, I made myself available by email to my parents, why, b/c I wanted the parents to be part of thier kids education and know whats going on, or have the ability to ask me a question...

Currently, with all the issues going on in my sons school district especially, they are under "fiscal watch", it is my understanding that they are making alot of cut backs, still looking for a superintendant, after the last one resigned after making the district pay through the district credit card for personal purchases such as alcohol, yes, I said alcohol..and lots and lots of it, something like $2000 or more.... and lots of other stuff that the district should not have been paying for... the total for his cc was rather high, around $7000 if I remember right, plus other main school employees were doing the same.... the state is supposedly expected to take over our school district by the end of this school year. Maybe then, it will get straightened out. But it is sad it has to come to that for a school district to get it together.

Ah, well see, that makes more sense to me. I just wasn't looking at it from a political standpoint, I guess. I hope they are thinking that the teacher will fight it and be reinstated by a court, washing the school board's hands of the responsibility.

If I had kids in a school district like that, I would loudly remove my kids and place in a district where educators have balls (the hairy ones, not the slithery ones, although additionally having slithery ones would be cool) enough to do what's right and tell closed minded retards to grow up.

But that's me...

I would definitely protest if it was in my district as well!
