I built a rat cabinet cage out of it, measurements are 3ftx2ftx4ft with levels and whatnot, and it's been over 2 years, and the cage still looks like it was just built(well.. except for the wee...).

This is what I plan on building my rack out of and hopefully it goes just as well.

Ya - they did not have large mel sheets - just uncoated MDF that looked kind of . . bready - like it was waiting on some butter.

I have a few racks that I just painted black, But most of them are left unfinished. I have a few racks made out of MDF that work really well, Nice and smooth for sliding the bins in and out. It's pretty easy to build with, Just predrill first and use coarse threaded screws.

I would treat any bare wood especially the underside of each level where the tubs/animals will be in contact with it. If you dont you highly increase the risk of mold from any water/humidity. I'll admit I found this out the hardway, fortunately no harm was done to the snakes where I found it starting. I used a water based sealer and it perfectly.

Yeah, MDF has always looked a bit flimsy and flakes alot. The particle board doesn't seem to do that(and I have rats, so I would know if they've been chewing on it or not, LoL).
