Re: more cost effecient (headache ahead)
is that 7.5 compressed to like 2.5 or 3? about 30-35lbs?
I have only one type I get locally now. It is 9.0 uncompressed, 3.0 compressed, and weighs about 40 lbs, small pieces, a little dusty for $5.30
The stuff I got from harlan was like $5.50 3.0 compressed, but probably only 7-8 uncompressed, but is different from every other one ive gotten, not sure how to describe it... its like the wood was shaved off into curls instead of chipped, so it makes it more bouncy/soft.
We used to get some 5.0 to 2.5 at walmart, but those were bigger chunks but not as compressed.

Yeah it's something like that Bryan. I like it because there is no dust to irritate my rats (or me when I'm cleaning)

OH! I recently visited their website- what do you use? Ive read their rodent 8604(i think) it primo food considering it starts with soy as a base (i believe that's how it was, base or top ingredient) instead of corn.
How much is the bedding and which do you use?
Re: more cost effecient (headache ahead)
How much a rodent will eat depends entirely upon the food being fed. If its a low grade food with alot of corn and alfalfa they will burn through it fast. A good quality food will be eaten more slowly as they are getting the nutrition they need from a smaller amount (also means less poop). With a soy based pellet 10 lbs of food will last a pair 3 months ... so 2 lbs should be good for a few weeks.
If they are fed over head it will last the 3 months ... if feed in a feed bowl it will last a shorter amount of time. Rats are hoarders, they will build up a little "cache" of food, over the course of a week it will be deficated and urinated on, and should be thrown away with the bedding change. Either way feed should be offered "free range". How many "treats" are they fed? I feed fruits and/or vegetables every few days ... this slows down their consumption of the block slightly.
