Don't forget that some snakes are venomous and because of that, some people deem ALL snakes to be venomous. I was at a family gathering this weekend and my sister-in-law was talking about the park she works at in Florida and how they are having a problem with large pythons being released into the wild and causing problems with the natural eco-system. Then we were talking about the snake that ate the alligator and died, which let to my other brother-in-law stating that the pythons kill with their venom and then quickly swallow their prey. I quickly corrected him.

Basically people are afraid of what they don't know. They see a snake and assume it to be venomous and deadly. Even if it is a harmless corn or garter snake.
